Microsoft-office

Microsoft-officeMicrosoft said Tuesday it will put a billion dollars’ worth of cloud computing power in the hands of non-profit groups and university researchers free of charge.
A philanthropic arm of the US software colossus will make the donation during the coming three years to 70,000 non-profit groups and researchers, chief executive Satya Nadella said while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

VIRUSES, hitherto almost unknown to scientists, are in town – from China to Saudi Arabia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada to Nigeria – unleashing ill health and death.
The list of the infections currently circulating around the world and blamed on the viruses include Lassa fever in West Africa, especially Nigeria; Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Sierra Leone; the Zika virus in Latin America, which is also causing birth defects; Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in El Salvador; Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-CoV) that has spread to all continents; and Human infection with Avian Influenza A (H7N9) in China not to mention the bird-to-bird strain circulating in Nigeria.
The Guardian’s investigation revealed that most viral infections peak between November and March, and that the situation this year is worsened because of the effect of climate change factors such as El Nino.

What You Need to Know about Lassa Fever & How to Avoid It

Lassa-fever-Nigerians-on-red-alert

After the Ebola crisis of 2014, Nigeria is now facing the spread of Lassa Fever.
Lassa Alert, a collective led by Federal Ministry of Health. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Partners are focusing to spreading awareness to help stop the spread of the disease. Lassa Alert has shared key information about the disease which has now been confirmed in several states around Nigeria.
Over 40 people in 10 states have been confirmed dead since this outbreak started.
Key facts
Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness of 1-4 weeks duration that occurs in West Africa.
The Lassa virus is transmitted to humans via contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.
Person-to-person infections and laboratory transmission can also occur, particularly in hospitals lacking adequate infection prevent and control measures.
Lassa fever is known to be endemic in Benin (where it was diagnosed for the first time in November 2014), Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and parts of Nigeria, but probably exists in other West African countries as well.
The overall case-fatality rate is 1%. Observed case-fatality rate among patients hospitalized with severe cases of Lassa fever is 15%.
Early supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment improves survival.
Background
Though first described in the 1950s, the virus causing Lassa disease was not identified until 1969. The virus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the virus family Arenaviridae.
About 80% of people who become infected with Lassa virus have no symptoms. One in five infections result in severe disease, where the virus affects several organs such as the liver, spleen and kidneys.
Lassa fever is a zoonotic disease, meaning that humans become infected from contact with infected animals. The animal reservoir, or host, of Lassa virus is a rodent of the genus Mastomys, commonly known as the “multimammate rat.” Mastomys rats infected with Lassa virus do not become ill, but they can shed the virus in their urine and faeces.
Because the clinical course of the disease is so variable, detection of the disease in affected patients has been difficult. However, when presence of the disease is confirmed in a community, prompt isolation of affected patients, good infection protection and control practices and rigorous contact tracing can stop outbreaks.

Charly Boy weighs in on Will Smith’s Accent in the Movie “Concussion” & How Nigerians Reacted

Charly-Boy-Will-Smith

Have you seen the movie CONCUSSION?
If not, I suggest you do so.
In the movie, Super A-list actor, Will Smith plays a lead role, where he depicts the character of a notable Nigerian Doctor, Bennett Omalu, the first ever doctor to research and find out the link between banging heads in American football and a disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, CTE and whose works have saved lives in the NFL  in the United States and worldwide.
Hummmmm, wouldn’t you expect that Nigerians would be happy with Will Smith for portraying our brother in good light for his great work? Instead, Naijas are beefing Will Smith for failing to capture the Nigerian accent to the T. Haba!!!
Why can’t my people for once just focus on that which is positive and good?
If Dr. Bennett Omalu has been in America as long as over 10yrs, do we expect him to still possess the igbotic accent some of us are born with? Even on our own local radio station, I hear some presenters sounding more Americanised than Americans. Should we insist they speak with their strong Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa accent?
Without that movie, we wouldn’t have really known who Dr. Bennett Omalu is. Isn’t it enough that he discovered how to save the lives of a lot of football superstars? Even in our own country Nigeria, have we really shown that we value our players, celebrities, entertainers, and generally, all those that make us happy?
Please we should chill with all the silly, stupid and uninformed comments. OMG!
The fact, for Christ’s sake is that Dr. Bennett Omalu  left Nigeria since 1993. How do we know if he even spoke with a heavy accent before he left our shores? Nobody knows if he had an igbo accent in the first place, so why do they expect Will Smith to speak like someone who hasn’t crossed the Seme border?
Even me CharlyBoy, after 5yrs in America, most Americans that I came across would have sworn that I was born and buttered in America. Abegi.
Sometimes I can’t believe my people’s hypocrisy, just too obnoxious, makes me sick.
For a long time now, the foreign press and television stations have portrayed Africa and Nigerians in particular as jokers, fraudsters, common criminals and everything bad; now that we have a movie that’s flipping a positive side, must we find something negative to say, all because of Will Smith’s accent?
For all those people out there yarning akpata, please shut the fuckup, nobody wants to read or hear your useless comments on this matter.
If you can’t applaud a job well done, just keep forever mute and stop all the unnecessary noise.

Manchester United: Are they stuck in the past?

The Red Devils have taken 37 points from their first 23 games, their lowest total in the Premier League era and three points fewer than amassed under David Moyes during the 2013-14 season.
After the defeat against Southampton, Van Gaal had said fans were "right to boo" but added: "For better or for worse we have to stick together.
"We are working very hard, but we have had a lot of injuries. That you cannot change."
Van Gaal was also criticised on the club's official television channel, MUTV.
Former Reds winger Bojan Djordjic suggested that "the only corner we are turning is into some dark alley where we get robbed again".
Next up for United is a trip to Championship side Derby in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday (kick-off 19:55 GMT).

Arsenal v Chelsea: Mythbusting - is Diego Costa a dirty player?

Diego Costa and Arsenal defender Gabriel

In a new series, we analyse popular myths to assess whether they are based on fact - or fiction. Do they stand up to scrutiny, or are they nothing more than tired cliches?

Diego Costa is never far from the headlines.
The Chelsea striker has twice been banned for three games in his two seasons in England, once for stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can and once for a clash with Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny.
Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini suggested earlier this season that he should tone down his aggressive side, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused him of always being "involved in provocation", while his international manager, Spain boss Vicente del Bosque, described his conduct during the Blues' 2-0 win over the Gunners in September as "unedifying".
So as Costa's Chelsea prepare to travel to Arsenal on Sunday, we look at whether the 27-year-old's reputation is deserved.
